The best public golf course Hong Kong doesn’t have much debate because there’s only one Public Golf Course facility – Kau Sai Chau, which has three public golf courses open to the general public. So it then becomes a case of which of those public golf courses in Hong Kong is the best. The South Course at Kau Sai Chau is my pretty much everyones view, the least favourable and can’t be considered the best public golf course Hong Kong unless you’re a beginner and haven’t play anything else. So now the best public golf course Hong Kong comes down to the North Course at Kau Sai Chau and the East Course at Kau Sai Chau.
The North Course at Kau Sai Chau is where most of Hong Kong’s Professional events are held and for most serious/good players, the North is considered the best public golf course Hong Kong. It’s got a number of good holes, is walking only, which golf purists will enjoy (unless they happen to play it in the middle of summer and it’s 36 degrees, and has some great views. Personally, we don’t care for it that much, but is it better than the East Course at Kau Sai Chau? Perhaps, it really depends on what kind of golfer you are. The East Course has better views, you can use carts (there is no way you’d be able to walk this course as some of the walks between holes are more than a 1km and uphill) and this is the more popular of the courses at KSC.
What we don’t like about the East Course at Kau Sai Chau is the “miss the fairway, lose your ball” type play that you will encounter on pretty much every single hole. We’ve said this before, but we played with a beginner out here once and saw him lose 9 golf balls on the first hole – not the way to start your round, let alone your golfing career! You can easily lose balls on every single out there on the East Course, in our opinion, this doesn’t really make for the best public golf course Hong Kong.
The North Course is also a ball losing heaven, or nightmare, but less so. Why we probably favour it is because most holes give you more options off the tee. Yes, you can and will lose your fair share of golf balls but it’s slightly less penalising. Some say it’s more difficult, but we think not. Either way, if you’re having even a slightly off day, you’re going to lose balls and end up with some big scores.
In closing, we’d say that the North Course at Kau Sai Chau is the best public golf course Hong Kong but that’s not really saying much.
