The Most Beautiful Golf Course in Hong Kong: Clearwater Bay Championship Course

The most beautiful golf course in Hong Kong is widely considered to be the Championship Course at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club.

Opened in 1982, the Championship Course at Clearwater Bay was designed by acclaimed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. It is known for its stunning natural beauty and dramatic ocean views.

Key Features of Clearwater Bay Championship Course

Some key features that make the Clearwater Bay Championship Course stand out as the most beautiful in Hong Kong include:

Coastal Setting: The course is situated along the coastline of the Clearwater Bay peninsula. It provides breathtaking vistas of the South China Sea and surrounding islands.

Dramatic Elevation Changes: The course features significant elevation changes, with many holes playing up and down steep slopes. This creates an exciting and visually striking playing experience.

Lush Tropical Landscaping: The course is beautifully landscaped with tropical plants, palm trees, and colorful flowers that complement the coastal environment.

Strategically Placed Bunkers: The course utilizes strategically placed bunkers, both along the fairways and surrounding the greens, that add both visual appeal and challenge.

Unique Rock Formations: Several holes feature unique rock formations that create a dramatic, almost links-like feel to parts of the course.

In addition to its natural beauty, the Clearwater Bay Championship Course is also regarded as one of the most challenging and well-designed courses in Hong Kong. It has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments over the years.

Signature Hole

The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club’s championship course is renowned for its exceptional design and stunning natural beauty. One of the standout features of the course is its signature Hole 3, which has been recognized as one of the “500 Best Holes in the World”.

The 18-hole championship layout at Clearwater Bay has often been compared to other celebrated golf courses, such as the iconic Pebble Beach in California. This comparison is a testament to the course’s exceptional quality and the remarkable golfing experience it provides.

Clearwater’s signature hole No 3 on the Ocean Nine

Given the exceptional nature of the Clearwater Bay championship course, it is no surprise that the club has been selected to host numerous prestigious local and international tournaments over the years. These have included the Men’s and Women’s Open Amateur Golf Championships of Hong Kong, the Omega PGA Championships, the Southeast Asian Amateur Golf Championship (51st Putra Cup), and the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in 2015.

For golfers visiting Hong Kong, playing a round at the Clearwater Bay Championship Course is considered a must-do experience to take in the stunning natural scenery of the region.

The best public golf course Hong Kong doesn’t have much debate because there’s only one Public Golf Course facility – Kau Sai Chau, which has three public golf courses open to the general public. So it then becomes a case of which of those public golf courses in Hong Kong is the best. The South Course at Kau Sai Chau is my pretty much everyones view, the least favourable and can’t be considered the best public golf course Hong Kong unless you’re a beginner and haven’t play anything else. So now the best public golf course Hong Kong comes down to the North Course at Kau Sai Chau and the East Course at Kau Sai Chau.

The North Course at Kau Sai Chau is where most of Hong Kong’s Professional events are held and for most serious/good players, the North is considered the best public golf course Hong Kong. It’s got a number of good holes, is walking only, which golf purists will enjoy (unless they happen to play it in the middle of summer and it’s 36 degrees, and has some great views. Personally, we don’t care for it that much, but is it better than the East Course at Kau Sai Chau? Perhaps, it really depends on what kind of golfer you are. The East Course has better views, you can use carts (there is no way you’d be able to walk this course as some of the walks between holes are more than a 1km and uphill) and this is the more popular of the courses at KSC.

What we don’t like about the East Course at Kau Sai Chau is the “miss the fairway, lose your ball” type play that you will encounter on pretty much every single hole. We’ve said this before, but we played with a beginner out here once and saw him lose 9 golf balls on the first hole – not the way to start your round, let alone your golfing career! You can easily lose balls on every single out there on the East Course, in our opinion, this doesn’t really make for the best public golf course Hong Kong.

The North Course is also a ball losing heaven, or nightmare, but less so. Why we probably favour it is because most holes give you more options off the tee. Yes, you can and will lose your fair share of golf balls but it’s slightly less penalising. Some say it’s more difficult, but we think not. Either way, if you’re having even a slightly off day, you’re going to lose balls and end up with some big scores.

In closing, we’d say that the North Course at Kau Sai Chau is the best public golf course Hong Kong but that’s not really saying much.

The back nine at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club takes you back up to the clubhouse and teeing off with perhaps the best view of any 10th hole in Asia. It’s a difficult Par which tempts you to take on way more than you should. You’ll need to play this hole a few times before you can even beging to work it out. The 11th at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club is a nice little Par 3, deceptively difficult, and even more of a challenge if the wind is blowing, there’s trouble (cliff) left, and a bailout area right, but an up and down from there is no picnic as the green has some tricky breaks and slopes.

Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club

The 12th is one of our favorite holes at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club, strong driving hole and great approach shot which makes you think. You’ll most likely only have a short iron in your hand but going at the Pin if it’s cut ont he left portion of the green is only for the brave, or some would say stupid. Best play is to aim for middle right side, regardless of where the pin is. 13 is a long par 4 with an intimidating tee shot and difficult approach with what will almost certainly be a fairway wood or hybrid. 14 is a relatively straight forward par 3 playing slightly downhill. Take the time to head over to the right side of the tee box to check out the views. 99 times our of a hungry it’ll be hazy but if you’re lucky enough to play on one of those clear days, it’s something to admire.

Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club

The 15th hole at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club is a great little Par 5 that doglegs right at almost 90 degrees. If you can take on the dogleg, you can be left with a middle iron, but the beauty is you need to hit a great golf shot, not a perfect golf shot, but a great one. Miss it right and you’ll be reloading, tug it left and you’ll also be reloading. You can even hit 3 wood and still have a chance of reaching with an iron. Even if you’ve got a fairway wood there’s not too much trouble around the green unless you really spray it. This is one of our favourite holes in Hong Kong. 16 is a ho-hum Par 3, it’s straight foward but everytime we play it someone manages to hit one in the not-so-obvious hazard guarding the right side of the hole.

Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club

The 17th at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club is an annoying little Par 4 up the hill. We say annoying because it’s around 300 yards and we’ve yet to make a Par. The play is a long iron/hybrid off the tee leaving yourself with a short iron into those elevated green. You could hit driver, but there’s absolutely no reason to unless you’re extra long and can drive the green, or extra short. Like many holes at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club, it makes you think on every shot and there are many ways to play the hole.

Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club

Finally, Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club has one of the most hated and loved golf holes in Hong Kong. It’s a dogleg left that can leave you with a flip wedge in your hand or a 3 wood, depending on how much of the dogleg (and trouble) you think you can cut off. This is maybe the best risk-reward golf hole in Hong Kong and perhaps in all of Asia. One day you can make what will feel like the easist birdie or eagle of your life, the next you could take a 10.

The Fanling Golf Course at the Hong Kong Golf Club has faced further issues with the debate about whether or not to turn the course into public housing (because there’s not enough concrete in Hong Kong).  Apparently a bunch of villages from the NE New Territories descended on the Fanling Golf Course to try and get the government to redevelop land rather than have Mr and Mrs Money Bags play golf.

Here’s the full report from ejinsight.com

Scores of villagers from Northeast New Territories staged a protest at the Fanling Golf CourseHong Kong Golf Club in Fanling on Sunday, demanding that the government redevelop the land into a public housing project instead of driving them out of their homes, Apple Daily reported on Monday.

“You allow bigwigs to play Fanling Golf Course, leaving no more room for the grassroots to live in,” the villagers shouted.

They said the Fanling golf course should be taken over by the government to meet the housing needs of low-income groups in Hong Kong.

The Fanling Golf Course, which covers an area of 170 hectares, is as big as Tsuen Wan and can be redeveloped into a new town, the protesters said.

But instead, the government chose to convert their farms into two new towns, uprooting thousands of families from their villages, while maintaining the playground of only about 2,000 rich and influential people, they said.

Security guards at the Fanling Golf Course allowed the villagers to stage their protest, which lasted a couple of hours, but two policemen were called to monitor the situation.

No one was reported arrested at the Fanling Golf Course.

The Fanling Golf Club is actually the Hong Kong Golf Club and usually goes by the name “The Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling.  For our cases, because it seems many people think Fanling Golf Club is the proper name, we’ll refer to it here as such, and not it’s proper name.

The Fanling Golf Club is Hong Kong’s oldest golf club and actually consists of three courses, The Old Course, The New Course and The Eden Course.  In this Golf in Hong Kong  blog post, we’ll be giving you our review of rthe New Course at the Fanling Golf Club.  The New Course is not surprisingly, the newest golf courses at Fanling Golf Club, and we think it’s the best golf  course in Hong Kong.  It’s the longest and most challenging, and serious golfers in Hong Kong will enjoy this golf course in Hong Kong.  The New Course at Fanling Golf Club starts off with a relatively easy Par 4, but longer players can’t hit driver off the tee as there’s a small creek that splits the fairway which you can easily hit into.  You’ll need to lay back and take your medicine and hit a middle to long-iron into this pretty large green.  It’s one of our favourite opening holes of any golf course in Hong Kong, a nice gentle start that can a high score can really only be made by hitting a total quacker.

Fanling Golf Club

The 2nd hole of the New Course at Fanling Golf Club is a good little Par 3, plays ever so slightly uphill and most players will be hitting wedge or 9 into this two tiered green.  A great little hole, hit a good shit and you can make an easy birdie, hit a bad shot and you can make double in a heartbeat (as with many of the holes on the New Course at Hong Kong Golf Club) or Fanling Golf Club.  The third is an excellent dogleg left Par 5, cut off as much as you want but run the risk of catching the trees. It’s reachable and is one of our favourite holes at Fanling Golf Club even though it’s not spectacular by any means of the word.  It keeps getting better as the 4th, a long uphill Par 3, is probably the most demanding Par 3’s of any of the three courses at Fanling Golf Club.  Again, you can easily make a bogey, double or worse. Hitting the green here is a feat in itself.  The 5th at Fanling Golf Club is one of those annoying little par 4’s that you think you should easily make Par every time.  It’s really just a 3-wood-flip wedge, but the green slopes severely back to front. We’ve putted off this green into the front bunker and make a snowman on this hole and I think we’ve bogeyed it more times than we’ve parred it.  It’s annoying, but it a good sense of the word.

The 6th hole at Fanling Golf Club is a stronger Par 4, you need to be long to reach the top of the hill and give yourself a look at the green.  The 7th is another very straight forward Par 3 that we think typifies many of the holes at Fanling Golf Club. It’s right there in front of you, when you stand on the tee, it’s not daunting, but once you reach the green, that’s where the problems start.  The 8th hole at Fanling Golf Club is a long Par 4, you must hit the fairway to give yourself the best chance of making a Par.  The 9th is one of our favourites, another reachable Par 5, dogleg leg. If you hit it good, and cut the corner, you could end up with a long or even mid iron in your hand for your second, but the really challenge of this hole at the Fanling Golf Club is the approach, with water left, bunker right, trouble long, to get it close requires nothing but the very best golf shot.

Fanling Golf Club Back Nine

The 10th is a nice straight away Par 4, this is your best chance at birdie on a Par 4.  The 12th is another long strong Par 4, dogleg right, and par on this hole is a great effort.  It’s a difficult driving hole, trees and trouble left, and trees and OB right. Fanling Golf Club’s 13th is an easy little Par 3, this is one hole they could something with, they have alternate tees for the Hong Kong Open and these should be used for regular play as the 120-130 yard hole is not really that much if a challenge unless you’re really hacking it around.  The 14th is a par 5, again reachable for longer hitters but you must get all of all your driver to have a chance as the fairway is slightly elevated. The 15th is another little tricky and very annoying Par 4. The approach is one of the best out here at Fanling Golf Club and  big number can me made with even half a decent shot as anything errant will spell trouble.  The 16th is down the hill and longer players will want to lay up to avoid another creek.

The 17th hole at Fanling Golf Club is a good short Par 3, there’s some trouble around so even though most of us will be hitting a short iron, it’s intimidation factor comes into play.  The 18th is a blind tee shot, there’s a stake on top of the hill that’s an aiming point, but we aim right of that, between that and the tree line on the right.  Don’t miss it left.

The New Course at Fanling Golf Clubs is our favourite golf course in Hong Kong.  Check it out and you wont be disappointed. Check out how you can play it by visiting hkgolfclub.org

By Guest Blogger Richard Hughes.

We’ve reviewed Nine Eagles Golf Course in Hong Kong before and it wasn’t favourable. To recap what we said in that review, basically the course is so-so, the price is expensive and management, particularly the General Manager, is unresponsive. We asked for permission to teach there during weekdays, when the course is not busy, wanted to promote the course and send people out there, but the course was uncooperative, to put it nicely, and didn’t want anything to do with promoting the course (for no charge).

In this review of Nine Eagles Golf Course Hong Kong, I’d like to go over my most recent experience. I called up Nine Eagles Golf Course Hong Kong to ask if I could take my 3 year old son on to the practice chipping and putting greens (not the actual course). I was told over the phone no problem, no restrictions. When I got to the course the receptionist asked how tall by boy is. I told her 95 cm. She said sorry but you can’t play (practice) because you need to be over 105cm. I said that was ridiculous, that I had called the course the previous night and explained what I had been told.

I asked to speak to the Manager, and not surprisingly she said the Manager wasn’t there. I asked to call him, but she said she couldn’t do that. The General Manager is obviously a very shy person and doesn’t like to talk or communicate with anybody and had obviously given instructions not to contact him under any circumstancs. After a few more minutes, she then said pointed to my son, and said “oh, he’s not wearing proper golf attire”, citing his shoes. He was wearing flat bottom Nike shoes. She was obviously now trying to come up with other reasons why he couldn’t play (practice). I demanded to speak to someone else, she then called the starter who came, took one look at my son and said that’s fine.

What a performance. They’re supposedly trying to encourage golf in Hong Kong, but everytime we’ve been out there, we encounter some sort of problem. They walk around with their noses in the air and playing there is like walking into Augusta National. It’s absoluetly ridiculous. Repeated attempts to contact the General Manager, Vincent Leung, go unanswered.

There are apparently plans to turn SkyCity Nine Eagles Golf Club in Hong Kong into a shopping mall (see this story here: http://www.construction-post.com/airport-authority-plans-shopping-complex-golf/) and that will actually be a welcome change because playing golf at SkyCity Nine Eagles Golf Club in Hong Kong is not, and has never been enjoyable experience.

If you want a lesson on how not to run a golf course, just turn to SkyCity Nine Eagles Golf Club in Hong Kong.
