Nomura Cup looms as next test for Hong Kong, China

The Nomura Cup – or Asia Pacific Amateur Team Championship – is all set for its 30th edition from October 13-15 at the Vinpearl Golf Hai Phong, in Hai Phong, Vietnam and the Hong Kong, China trio of Jeffrey Shen, Alexander Yang and Isaac Lee are ready to return to the fray.

All three were most recently seen in action at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Japan – Shen finishing T13, Yang T16 and Lee T26 – and will again be fronting up against the region’s best at a tournament that dates right back to 1963.

It’s a tournament that has helped launch the careers of some of Asia Pacific’s greats over the decades. Open Championship winner Cameron Smith was part of the winning Australian team in 2011 while a whole host of Asian Tour stars have graced the tournament.

“It’s another great test for our squad and all three players have tried to freshen up after playing the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at the start of the month,” says Golf Association of Hong Kong, China Head Coach Tim Tang.

“These players continue to grow in experience and that’s what will pay off for them in the long term and playing in Vietnam against the region’s best will bring a whole new set of challenges.”

The Nomura Cup was originally staged as a tri-nation tournament – between the Philippines, Japan and Chinese Taipei – but recent editions have featured more than 20 nations and territories.

Japan won the last staging of the tournament – held at the Manila Southwoods Golf & Country Club – taking their tally of titles to 10, equal with Australia. That was in 2022, when the Hong Kong, China trio of Leon D’Souza, Lou Tam and Lam finished ninth.

“It’s been a busy year for all our representative squads but all the hard work continues to pay off as Hong Kong, China’s players are not only playing in these major tournaments but they’re playing themselves into contention to win them,” says Tang.

Today’s guest blogger Bill Graham talks about kids golf Hong Kong and gives his thoughts on getting your kids into golf in Hong Kong and some thoughts on buying kids golf clubs in Hong Kong.

When Golf in Hong Kong contacted me about doing this article on kids golf Hong Kong I was very excited because I must have spent days researching kids golf Hong Kong and have been eager to share my experience and thoughts about getting kids into golf while living in Hong Kong. There doesn’t seem to be too many peopple offering kids-only golf lessons in Hong Kong so it’s not as easy as say signing your kid up to a junior golf program if you live in the Western world. The first thing I’d do if looking for kids golf Hong Kong is check out the Hong Kong Golf School, they don’t list any specific kids golf programs on their website but trust me, they have golf Pro’s who are offering kids golf Hong Kong lessons on a regular basis.

If you contact them, they can pretty much give you all the info you need on kids golf Hong Kong and even offer junior golf clubs for sale for all ages, so if you have a kid keen on kids golf Hong Kong then they’ll want to get themselves a proper set of golf clubs. Kids clubs in Hong Kong are quite cheap, the HK Golfer Store offers Tiger Cub kids golf clubs starting at just over HKD$1000 and they will ship direct to your home or office in Hong Kong.

Because Hong Kong is a bit short on driving ranges these days, it’s not that easy to find places to take your kid to play golf in Hong Kong so finding a place near you is probably the biggest challenge. The Hong Kong Golf School offers various locations throughout Hong Kong that you can take your kid to learn golf so again, these guys are the best best to get your kid started in golf.

Some considerations when starting kids golf Hong Kong: Firstly, don’t force your kid(s) to learn golf, if you’re thinking that your kid might be the next Tiger Woods and your ticket to life on the beach, it’s more likely your kid will turn into Michelle Wie, burnt out by the age of 16. Sure, you can introduce them to golf but forcing them to take kids golf lessons in Hong Kong is not the way forward. Secondly, find a kids golf Hong Kong coach that your kids like. It’s not necessarily the coaches fault if your kids don’t like the instructor, like grownups, they just get along and relate to some people better than others.

I do know a couple of the golf coaches at the Hong Kong Golf School are particularly good with kids and I’ve heard some horror stories about some under qualified coaches at other golf learning institutes who coach like dicatators. If you’d like to know anything about else abiut kids golf Hong Kong, please get in touch with myself by contacting Golf In Hong Kong and asking for my contact details.

Thanks for reading my post on kids golf Hong Kong.
