Where to Play Golf in Hong Kong

If you’re visiting Hong Kong and wanting to play golf unfortunately there’s not much choice.  There’s only a handful of golf courses in Hong Kong and only one is Public – Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course, which has three courses – The East, North and South.  Kau Sai Chau is about an hours drive from Central (with good traffic) and then a further 15 minutes by Ferry.  The Ferry’s go every 20 minutes (The Kau Sai Chau ferry schedule can be found at Kau Sai Chau’s website) and it’s a pleasant ride out.  When going to play golf in Hong Kong at Kau Sai Chau, make sure you leave plenty of time as this is not a course you want to late for.  Miss your tee time and don’t expect to get out – tee times are booked up a week in advance and you often have to call several times to get through to the automated tee time system.

The other three (18 hole) courses, Clearwater Bay Golf Club, Discovery Bay Golf Club and the Hong Kong Golf Club, although private, do allow guests on during the weekdays for around HKD$1,500-$2,000. The Hong Kong Golf Club is an old tree-lined course with small greens, actually there’s three courses, the New, The Old, and Eden. It’s a good test of golf and you don’t want to be even slightly off line at this golf course in Hong Kong.

Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club is a very short course with some nice holes. If you play conservatively at this Hong Kong golf course, you can shoot a good score but if you play aggressively, you can make some easy birdies but just as easily rack up a big number.

There’s also Nine Eagles Golf Course near the Hong Kong Airport, but it’s somewhat disappointing with too many short holes to be challenging for experienced players and too difficult for beginners.  Rumour has it that they’re closing down sometime in 2014 so along with Asia Golf Club, there’s going to be even less choice to play golf in Hong Kong.
