Short Game Lessons in Hong Kong

One of the most overlooked and neglected parts of golf is the short game and golfers all over the world continue to focus and practice on their irons and driving. It’s true, trying to practice your short game in Hong Kong is difficult, there’s limited places for the general golfing population to go. Asia Golf in Cheung Sha Wan has a short game area but to be honest it’s downright shite.

They have a bunker area but the bunkers are about 1 foot wide and have quite a few small rocks and stones in them. There’s also what they refer to as a “Chipping Area” – this is hard to describe and is more shite than the bunkers, basically it’s 4 driving mats lined up with some baskets in front of you on astro-turf, so you might as well just practice chipping on the actual driving range itself.

Then there’s the putting green, possibly the fastest and most useless practice putting green I’ve come across in 3 continents. I don’t even want to try to describe it, and all I can say is don’t even bother. Still, that’s pretty much your only option for those people living on Hong Kong Island in Kowloon.

At Kai Sai Chau there’s a practice facility but apparently you have to take a golf lesson to use it, what a ridiculous rule.  At Whitehead Club, which is about a $250 taxi ride and 30 minutes ride, there’s also a short game area but it’s average at best.  The bunker area is ok, the chipping area is jus not designed well and it’s really not worth going all the way out there just for that.

The best bet to practice your short game in Hong Kong is by taking an on-course playing lesson. Golflessonshongkong.com can customise a golf lesson program for you help you improve your short game.
