HONG KONG GOLFERS TARGET MERCEDES-BENZ OPPORTUNITY

3 March 2014: More than 150 golfers from Hong Kong will tee off in the inaugural HKGA Mercedes-Benz Classic at Discovery Bay Golf Club on 4-5 March with a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Germany in their sights.

A total of eight winners and runners-up from the two-day men’s and ladies’ Stableford tournament will qualify for the prestigious MercedesTrophy Hong Kong at Discovery Bay on 23 May. Winners of that event will advance to the MercedesTrophy Asian Final on the Gold Coast in Australia and from there the highest scorer from Hong Kong will qualify for the MercedesTrophy World Final in Stuttgart, Germany.

The annual HKGA Mercedes-Benz Classic was launched in a bid to provide more playing opportunities for golfers in Hong Kong following the recent three-year appointment of Mercedes- Benz as the Exclusive Car Partner of the Hong Kong Golf Association (HKGA).

The HKGA was formed in 1968 with a mission to govern, promote and grow golf in Hong Kong. Responsibilities include Hong Kong national teams; junior and elite player development; grassroots initiatives; a centralised handicapping service for 15,000+ subscribers; and the running
of international and domestic golfing events in Hong Kong – including more than 30 amateur tournaments each year plus the Hong Kong Open, the city’s oldest professional sporting event.
A National Sports Association, the HKGA works closely with the golf clubs of Hong Kong (Hong Kong Golf Club, Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club, Discovery Bay Golf Club and Shek O Country Club); the public golf courses at Kau Sai Chau and Nine Eagles; Hong Kong’s public driving ranges; and governing bodies including the Home Affairs Bureau, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong China and the Hong Kong Sports Institute.
