Golf at Sky City Nine Eagles Hong Kong – Forget It!

This is the official review from Golf In Hong Kong on Sky City Nine Eagles Golf in Hong Kong – one of only two public golf courses in Hong Kong, albeit a short Nine holes consisting of 7 Par 3’s and two Par 4’s.  Let’s start with the booking process and general information. The first negative is the website, which uses flash so is only viewable on desktops and not on the vast majority of mobiles, including Samsung and iPhone. There’s a fair amount of information on the website but they’ve tried to make out they’re some kind of exclusive golf facility which is confusing since they’re set up as a public course and anybody can play.

Getting to Sky City Nine Eagles golf is reasonably easy, basically drive to the airport and take the turn to the Marriot, a map is on the Sky City Nine Eagles website. The website says you’re supposed to have a handicap card but we’ve never been asked and neither has anyone we’ve played with.  You must wear golf shoes and the starter thinks he’s at St Andrews and one of the most important people in Hong Kong. It’s all a bit laughable – it appears they’re trying to create a private club atmosphere but it just doesnt work when you have nine confusing holes, which we’ll move on to now.

The course itself is a little ridiculous, the opening hole is a nice easy 100 yarder, but after that there’s some pretty difficult holes if you’re a beginner, and let’s face it, mostly beginners are going to be playing here. There’s a island green surrounded by bunkers, another island ground surrounded by water, the two Par 4’s are less than 300 yards but have water on one side down both, and there’s another couple of Par 3’s that are long for beginners which doesnt make it any easier. A Nine Hole course is usually designed for beginners but this one is not a nice introduction to golf. Good players won’t want to play there because the holes are too short to be of any challenge although the course seems to have tried to cater to both and got it badly wrong. SOme of the greens hav some tricky slopes and undulations which makes it even more difficult for beginners. The course condition is average and don’t expet to get around quickly, especially during weekends when it tends to be busier.

Nine Eagles also has a practice putting green and short game area but you have to pay for using it. There’s also a golf academy but the quality of instruction is apparently less than stellar according to two of our staff who’ve taken golf lessons at Nine Eagles as part of our review. In another confusing move there’s no driving range, so golf coaching there is limited and there’s no worse place to practice on your game on the golf course!

Our conclusion is – if you’re wanting to check out Nine Eagles Golf in Hong Kong and are a beginner looking for a place to play, forget about Sky City Nine Eagles. Although it’s a day trip, take the time to go into China where you also have caddies to help you out. Sky City Nine Eagles’ confusing course layout, underwhelming unfriendly service and mind boggling coaching policies make this one leave of your list of golf courses in Hong Kong to play.
