COLIN MONTGOMERIE JUNIOR CHALLENGE, VIETNAM A HUGE SUCCESS

Quang Nam, Vietnam 27th July 2011

Colin Montgomerie, the victorious 2010 European Ryder Cup captain has successfully supported his inaugural junior golf tournament, The Colin Montgomerie Junior Challenge played in Danang, Vietnam.

Held over two days at his award winning championship designed golf course, The Montgomerie Links, The Colin Montgomerie Junior Challenge was officially sanctioned by the Vietnam Golf Association and sponsored by Vivendi Seve Trophy, Titleist and Indochina Land. The tournament was well contested and played in great spirit by Vietnam’s up and coming junior golfers with the victor in the senior 14 – 17 year old division being awarded to Luong Xaun Phat with a fine score of 145 net

“We are very proud to have the support of Colin Montgomerie creating his very own junior golf tournament to enable the continual growth of golf in this aspiring golfing nation. Proof that recent golf development programs innovated by the Asian Golf Industry Federation and supported by the Vietnam Golf Association are enabling children of all ages to participate in this great game. The inaugural junior challenge has been a tremendous success. With players like Do Le Gia Dat, the big hitting Ho Chi Minh City based 17 year old who impressed the galleries with regular drives over 300 yards, it won’t be long until there is a Vietnamese golfer represented on the world stage.” said Jon Tomlinson, General Director at The Montgomerie Links.

Dr Nguyen Ngoc Chu, General Secretary of the Vietnam Golf Association, added ““The Vietnam Golf Association is very pleased to cooperate with Colin Montgomerie and The Montgomerie Links to organize this tournament as junior golfers are the future of the game and to be able to stage such an event in a developing golf country such as Vietnam is a very exciting prospect.”

The Coin Montgomerie Junior Challenge will become an annual event on Asia’s golfing calendar with the plan to introduce junior national teams from 2012 to further elevate this into one of the most sought after junior titles in Asia and a stepping stone to the Asian Amateur Championship. .
